Mumbai Metro: Aqua Line 3's Full 33.5 Km Network Set to Roll Out by 2024

Mumbai‘s inaugural underground Metro, the Aqua Line 3, is gearing up to transform the city’s transportation landscape entirely.

Anticipated to be fully operational by 2024, the extensive 33.5 km network is witnessing significant milestones.

The first phase, spanning between Aarey and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), is nearing completion with a targeted finish by December. However, rigorous trials and meticulous testing are slated before its public unveiling, expected in early 2024. Meanwhile, Phase 2, connecting BKC to Colaba, is also fast-tracked for a full rollout within the same year, culminating the entire stretch.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) confirmed the deployment of nine essential trains for Phase 1’s launch, with plans for additional train sets arriving in regular intervals.

Detailing the progress, officials mentioned, “An impressive 86 per cent of Aqua Line’s construction is finalized, encompassing both phases. Specifically, the Aarey to BKC-Phase 1 section stands at an impressive 93 per cent completion, with civil work nearly at 98-99 per cent. Concurrently, efforts are ongoing to establish crucial systems like ventilation, lifts, escalators, entries/exits, presently at around 70 per cent completion.”

A senior official outlined the forthcoming roadmap, citing the targeted finish of all works by December 2024. Following this, comprehensive train trials will kick off, including assessments by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), an Indian Railways’ research wing. The final stages encompass integrated trials and certifications by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety before the Phase 1 public launch.

Delving into Phase 2’s progress, the official revealed, “Approximately 80 per cent of Phase 2, linking BKC to Colaba, is already accomplished. Challenges in heavily congested areas such as Girgaum, Kalbadevi, Prabhadevi, and Dadar demanded innovative solutions like the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) technology, causing slight delays due to meticulous excavation processes with supporting structures. Nonetheless, we’re on the brink of completion and anticipate opening Phase 2 within the slated 2024 timeline.”
