CHENNAI:  When 60-year-old Velaiamma of Bharath Nagar in Tambaram died in her sleep in March, little did the residents in the locality know about what was to follow. Nine residents in the same area and the adjoining MGR Nagar died in April and residents found it mysterious. The general belief was that these deaths had a connection to the temple of their guardian deity ‘Badrakaliamman’ that they constructed in the heart of MGR Nagar some years ago. The residents claimed that the deity was a guardian of their localities and hence the temple had to be on the border of the locality. Instead, they built it in the centre of their locality. The residents are now planning to approach the Tambaram municipality to shift the temple to the fringes of their locality. However, those associated with the temple rubbished the claims of the residents as superstitious beliefs. “I built this temple almost 18 years ago. People have superstitious beliefs. There are many ‘amman’ temples in the heart of the city and in other places,” said Suresh, a resident, who built the temple.Bharath Nagar and MGR Nagar in Ward 21 of Tambaram have about 600 families. Residents claimed that a few years ago, the Badrakaliamman temple was built in the heart of MGR Nagar and the deity was installed facing Bharath Nagar.
