Maruti's Estilo will be positioned at a premium over other products in the same category as Santro and Indica.

New Delhi: Maruti's premium compact car Zen is all set to return to the market in a new avatar.

Christened 'Estilo', the new addition in the already over-crowded hatchback bracket will be positioned at a premium over other products in the same category -- like Hyundai Santro and Tata Indica.

It is possible that Maruti will launch the car on the WagonR platform, in which case means it will become a stylish, premium version of WagonR.

Estilo -- which means style in Spanish, is based on the Suzuki’s popular hatchback MR Wagon.

Estilo bears no resemblance to the old Zen. It has a completely new look but the same feel. The new car has a monoform design, sleek interiors and distinctive aerodynamics. The car design, too, marks a complete departure from the old Zen.

The car is likely to hit the market in a few days from now. Market sources say Maruti will launch this car through a fashion show being planned by designer Tarun Tahiliani.

It will be the first of five models to be launched by Maruti in the next five years. Maruti's most recent new car launch was Swift.

Maruti had stopped production of the old Zen in March this year, after selling over 760,000 cars - including exports of 122,000 units.

Maruti Zen was a five-door hatchback launched in India in October, 1993. The car was based on the 1991 Suzuki Cervo Mode, which is available only in the Japanese market.

In India, Maruti Zen was the first car designed by Maruti for the worldwide market with India as its only production hub. The car's design and specifications were contemporary with world standards.

The Zen was, in fact, heralded as India's world car in the mid-1990s when it became the first made-in-India car to be exported to Europe, though under the Alto badge.
