3 teams to monitor Girivalam path

Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google NewsThe district administration has constituted three special teams to monitor violations of various kinds by commercial establishments and ashrams, along the 14-kilo metre-long Girivalam path in the temple town and take immediate action against them.The teams comprise of officials from revenue, police, pollution and fire service depar tments and Tamil Nadu Generation and Dist r ibut ion Corpora t ion (TANGEDCO) and representatives of local body administrations and Sri Arunchaleswarar Temple.“Each team has eight to 10 officials from various departments. They will focus on violations like power theft and encroachments. Each team will cover four to five kilometres of the Girivalam path on foot and look for violations by commercial establishments, roadside shops and ashrams,” said District Collector Vijay Pingale.The teams formed three months ago, intensified regular checks and had taken stern action against many commercial establishments.Apart from keeping a close watch on commercial establishments, the teams have thrown a spanner in the works of ashrams and annadhanam organisers. The teams had found an ashram indulging in power theft recently and had initiated action against it.“They took the issue to the notice of the Collector, who in turn, directed the officials of TANGEDCOto take action against the ashram,” said a revenue official.The team had warned several commercial establishments that had encroached the footpath along the Girivalam path and regulated them.“The teams had seized water sachets without the ISI mark, domestic gas cylinders used in hotels and electronic gadgets used by ashrams after tapping power illegally. These materials were seized and taken to the Collectorate,” added the official. The district administration has also engaged police personnel to visit the Girivalam path on full moon day in plain clothes, to look for violations and ensure safety of the pilgrims.Besides, the district administration has roped in scavengers and sanitary workers from four municipalities and the local body administration to clean the path before and after the festival on full moon nights“More than 100 scavengers and sanitary workers from municipalities and panchayats are engaged in the mass cleaning drive,” the official said.first published:September 03, 2012, 10:31 ISTlast updated:September 03, 2012, 10:31 IST
