Road safety initiatives Odisha government: Free tea for heavy vehicle drivers on NHs, aiming to curb accidents by keeping drivers refreshed and alert.

In orde to combat road mishaps and keep drivers alert on National Highways (NHs), Odisha’s State Transport Minister, Tukuni Sahu, announced today that drivers of heavy vehicles, including buses and trucks, will be treated to free tea along NHs.

The State Government, understanding the critical role of alertness in preventing accidents, will coordinate with roadside hotels and dhabas to provide complimentary tea to drivers. Minister Sahu highlighted that this initiative aims to address accidents occurring during the early hours when fatigue often leads to lapses in attention.

Under this program, drivers can not only enjoy free tea but also take necessary breaks for rest at designated roadside establishments. District Collectors will play a pivotal role in identifying suitable hotels and dhabas for the implementation of this refreshing facility.

ANI Reported, Truck drivers in Odisha are getting free tea at roadside eateries near highways. This initiative comes ahead of Road Safety Week, starting on January 1, 2024. The Odisha government has instructed regional transport officers to offer free tea to truck drivers from 3 am to 6 am, starting from December 22, 2023, until January 7, 2024. The goal is to minimize accidents caused by driver drowsiness or fatigue. Each regional transport office will have a fund of Rs 5000 for this purpose, as directed by the Odisha State Transport Authority.

Minister Tukuni Sahu expressed concern about the high incidence of accidents on NHs caused by drowsy driving, “Most of the accidents take place on NHs in the wee hours as the drivers fall asleep. The State Government has decided to avoid such situations by providing them refreshment in the form of tea.”

Having said that, the government’s strategic move is expected to enhance road safety and reduce mishaps by ensuring that drivers stay refreshed and alert during their journeys. This innovative approach underscores Odisha’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of its road users.
