The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken stringent action against Air India, imposing a hefty fine of Rs 10 lakhs for glaring non-compliance with passenger rights regulations.
DGCA’s thorough inspections conducted at key airports in Delhi, Kochi, and Bangalore during May and September 2023 uncovered concerning breaches of guidelines meant to safeguard passenger interests.
In their response, Air India acknowledged falling short of compliance with essential provisions outlined in the CAR. Instances included a failure to provide necessary hotel accommodations for passengers affected by flight delays, inadequate training for specific ground staff members, and the absence of compensation for international business class passengers who endured the inconvenience of unserviceable seats.
Upon scrutinizing Air India’s response, it became apparent that the airline had neglected various essential provisions. These infractions ranged from the absence of hotel accommodations for passengers affected by flight delays to inadequate training for certain ground staff, a direct violation of CAR stipulations. Additionally, international business class passengers were deprived of due compensation after being forced to travel in malfunctioning seats.
Consequently, DGCA has taken decisive action by slapping Air India with a substantial financial penalty of Rs. 10 lakhs for their flagrant non-compliance with DGCA regulations. This move underscores DGCA’s commitment to upholding passenger rights and ensuring strict adherence to aviation protocols by all carriers.
