New Delhi: Google, at its seventh annual developers conference, introduced Android Auto, a version of its popular Android operating system tailored to work with cars.

Google said on Wednesday the first cars running Android Auto will hit showrooms later this year, after the Internet search giant signed on 40 auto-industry partners for its car-software development alliance.

Executives demonstrated to developers on Wednesday how Android Auto acts like an extension of its popular mobile phone software and will be completely voice-enabled, allowing drivers to navigate maps and send messages while behind the wheel.

By connecting your phone to the screen in your car, you can access all of your music, contacts, and messages while keeping your eyes on the road.

Android Auto also supports voice-enabled messaging. It also reads out your new messages to you. Users can reply to a message with their voice.

Android Auto supports various other apps including Pandora, Songza, Stitcher, Spotify, Pocket Casts, and Tune In Radio.
