The Indian scooter market is flooded with a wide range of options - with two to three models from almost every company, and therefore, it becomes a tad difficult for buyers to choose and pick that one which would meet their needs the best. To help you make an informed choice, we have shortlisted 10 budget scooters based on their price, design, performance and fuel efficiency. The scooters listed here are available for under Rs 50,000, ex-showroom (Delhi).
1. Honda Activa i
Price: Rs 46,213 onwards
It is actually a well-made scooter with very good acceleration from the proven Honda 109cc engine. Honda's trump card here is its higher fuel economy. It offers 56.0kmpl in the city.
2. Yamaha Ray
Price: Rs 47,805 onwards
The Ray feels secure and manages bad roads quite well. It's a light scooter and promises good reliability. It impresses with its performance and economy. The scooter features a newly developed 113cc, air-cooled, four-stroke single cylinder engine that provides improved fuel efficiency. Yamaha claims that the Blue Core technology delivers 66kmpl, that is 4kmpl more than the older figure of 62kmpl.
3. TVS Scooty Zest
Price: Rs 45,228 onwards
It is one of the most affordable 100/110cc class scooters on the market. This is a solid little scooter, and it's light weight alone give the heavier scooters – which are also usually more expensive – a good run for the money. While TVS has designed it for young women, you can (and should) safely ignore that. It's a gender-free proposition.
4. Hero Pleasure
Price: Rs 44,900 onwards
It remains a pleasant scooter to ride, with decent go from the 102cc power plant. Hero has improved on the safety factor for the Pleasure by introducing their Integrated Braking System that triggers both brakes when the rear brake lever is depressed.
5. Yamaha Alpha
Price: Rs 48,936
If a conventional family scooter is meant to be practical with lots of space to carry the week's shopping, comfortable for short trips to the shops and easy on the pocket, then the Yamaha Alpha makes the cut. It is a few thousands dearer than the Activa and the Maestro.
6. Suzuki Let's
Price: Rs 45,957 onwards
The Let's is Suzuki’s first all new scooter since they launched the Access in 2007. The Let’s has exactly what our market is looking for – good looks, peppy performance and the promise of efficiency. It's perhaps the only scooter that actually crosses a (genuine) 90kmph flat out. As a product it makes strong argument against its rivals from Honda, Yamaha and TVS.
7. Mahindra Gusto
Price: Rs 44,850 onwards
It's not garish or overtly attention grabbing. The Gusto is decently quick taking 12 seconds to 60kmph before topping out at 85.3kmph. It’s also pleasantly efficient, returning 62.5kmpl on the highway and 58.2kmpl in the city for a combined figure of 60.25kmpl. The Gusto also gets quite a few interesting features beyond the trick adjustable seat. There isn’t much missing on this scooter, perhaps with the exception of the option of a front disc brake. It's a genuinely enjoyable scooter to ride and a big step ahead for Mahindra.
8. TVS Jupiter
Price: Rs 4,7989
The robust Jupiter feels like a grown up scooter with a planted feel and good stability. It has got bigger wheels and they are a huge big deal because they change the stability of the platform by heaps. It also has the useful external fuel cap on the back and it looks pretty good as well.
9. Hero Maestro
Price: Rs 48,050
The Hero Maestro is all work and very little play but the chassis balance is excellent. Whether it is on the turn in or in the middle of the corner, you’ll easily find trust and confidence in the tyres and the set up and cornering is easy, calm and potentially very quick. This kind of lean angle is confident and easy. With easy handling and good refinement, the Maestro is about functionality and not enthusiastic riding.
10. Mahindra Rodeo UZO 125
Price: Rs 47,250
It's powered by a 125cc engine with external front fuelling, and sports accented body-coloured impact resistant mirrors, feature loaded fully digital dashboard that incorporates a host of functions like a speedometer, tachometer, odometer, trip meter, fuel indicator, clock, high speed alarm and an accelerometer. It includes a mobile charging point and an illuminated storage space of 22 litres.
