A Bengaluru doctor and his lab technician who allegedly performed over 900 illegal abortions in three years, were arrested last week, officials said on Monday.
The accused, identified as Dr Chandan Bahl and lab technician Nissar, allegedly charged Rs 30,000 for each abortion they carried out at a hospital in Mysuru.
Police noted that the manager and the receptionist of the hospital, where the illegal abortions were carried out, were arrested earlier this month.
Last month, police busted the entire operation involving sex determination and female foeticide with the arrest of two accused, Shivalinga Gowda and Nayan Kumar in Mandya district while they were taking a pregnant woman in a car for abortion.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that a jaggery unit in Mandya was used as an ultrasound scan centre. A police team later seized the scan machine, which did not have valid authorisation or other official documents from the jaggery unit, a senior police officer said.
“Preliminary enquiry revealed that in the last three years, the accused doctor along with his accomplices performed around 900 illegal abortions at the Mysuru Hospital and charged about Rs 30,000 for each abortion,” the official noted.
Further investigation is underway to nab other suspects involved in the racket, he added.
