The Karnataka government has decided to reopen schools for classes 6 to 9. The decision came after a meeting of an expert advisory panel with government officials. Schools will reopen from September 6, however, attendance will not be mandatory.
Classes will be held on alternative days when 50% of students will be allowed on day 1 and the rest 50% on day 2 and so on. Online classes will also continue to take place and students will have to follow COVID appropriate behaviour at schools.
Only the districts with a positivity rate of less than 2 per cent will be allowed to reopen schools. This was one of the suggestions by an advisory panel. For classes 6 to 8, schools will be open five days a week and during weekends, sanitisation will be carried out by the schools. For classes 9 to 12, schools reopened last week and the state is reporting footfalls from students. Classes have been shut since mid-March 2020.
The suggestion came after several states had registered an increase in covid-19 cases after the reopening of schools.
A 13-member advisory council had earlier suggested phased-wise reopening of school. The panel’s recommendations will be studied today and a final call will be taken. The decision would impact about 29 lakh children studying in Classes 6 to 8 across schools in the state.
The report also suggests that attendance will not be mandatory, online classes would continue and COVID-19 protocols including face masks, social distancing, and sanitization. It also suggests that children below 10 years of age, and staff above 60 should avoid gatherings such as prayer meets etc at the campus.
