The cat is in the Tatas bag. Jaguar, an iconic car brand is a coveted possession for any lover of wheels - but it’s a brand, which has been through many a rough ride. CNN-IBN in association with National Geographic channel present ‘Driving Dreams’ - a documentary, which takes us inside one of the worlds great automakers as it fights to put a new generation of luxury consumer behind the wheel of its cars.
New Delhi: Jaguar is the story of one man - founder Sir William Lyons, who built up one of the world's great automotive names, renowned for style and remarkable performance.
Jaguar started out as the Swallow Sidecar Company and soon graduated into producing sleek, fast cars.
By the 1950s, Jaguar dominated racing in Europe with its lightweight, aerodynamic cars. The same era saw the introduction of the powerful luxury saloon car.
But then, everything changed in the automotive world. In 1961, Jaguar introduced a new sports car based on its racing heritage.
It was called the E-type. It was intimate and fast. The E-type rocked the automotive world.
Automobile Magazine President Jean Jennings says, “The E-type was the epitome of fabulousness. It was purely sexy. It was so dramatic, Jag had to build that car once it came out and to this day it is definitely the most beautiful Jag of all time."
“The E-type, the impact that car had on the world at large and how it came to define the 1960s along with two or three other key cars was seismic, absolutely seismic. And Jaguar needs to try and deliver that kind of impact again. You know, to go back to the rules of the game, the rules have changed a lot in the last 45 years. I'm not sure if it's possible to make the kind of impact that the original E-type did, “Car Magazine Editor Jason Barlow says.
The British car maker is defined by its heritage. What Jaguar needs is a hot new car to shake off its past.
