Two friends Mugilan and Diwakar, hailing from Thanjavur’s Maratha Palace are pursuing a B.com degree from Rajah Serfoji Government Arts College in Tamil Nadu. At present, both of them are in their third year of college. Since their first year in college, they have been working part-time in a food delivery business.
Despite earning a low salary, they remained confident and turned to YouTube to learn how to make panipuri. They experimented with various types of panipuri, such as yoghurt puri, chocolate puri, mango puri and garlic puri. Regarding this, student Mugilan shared, “My father passed away last year. Since then, our family’s financial situation has worsened. We faced financial difficulties even in meeting expenses for basic amenities such as buying clothes.”
Mugilan added, “I felt starting a business could help improve our situation.” After discussing this idea with his friend Diwakar, they agreed that opening a panipuri shop with a small investment would be feasible. Then they started learning how to make panipuri from YouTube and began selling its different types. Mugilan’s brother, who owned a second-hand car, helped them with the operation of the panipuri business.
Mugilan further added, “After our college classes finish at 2 pm, we don’t have time to go home and rest. Instead, we quickly gather all the ingredients needed for panipuri, load them into the car, and get to Bharath College by 3:30 pm to start running the shop until 9 pm”. “Recently, we’ve opened a new branch in front of Serfoji College. Our daily expenses usually vary from Rs 500 to a maximum of Rs 1,000.” The students are also planning to establish a fish farm and shared how they are actively working towards it.
