'I Might Not Live Past 10': Cameron Green Visits Bangalore Kidney Foundation, Reveals Battle With Chronic Disease
Cameron Green recently visited Bangalore Kidney Foundation and met with the patients undergoing treatment.

The 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has already given us a lot of entertaining face-offs. Ahead of the season, some huge trade deals took place between the franchises. First, Hardik Pandya, who captained Gujarat Titans (GT) to one title and one runners-up finish, returned to Mumbai Indians (MI). However, that also resulted in Cameron Green’s stint with the five-time champions coming to an end as he was traded to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Signed in 2023 for Rs 17.5 crore, the Australian became the most expensive player ever bought by MI. He scored over 450 runs in his debut IPL season to justify the hype.

Green will now represent RCB and the allrounder has reveled his battle with a chronic kidney disease.

Green was born with a stage two chronic kidney disease (CKD) that threatened his early childhood years.

Doctors informed his family that he wouldn’t live past the age of 12. It wasn’t until 2023 that the Perth-born all-rounder revealed for the first time that he has been battling CKD, and has to live on a strict diet and routine in order to make his dream of playing cricket work.

In fact, Green himself wasn’t let in on the ailment he was quietly fighting against, and was taken care of by his mother, who would prepare kidney-friendly meals.

He recently visited the Bangalore Kidney Foundation (BKF) and is playing his part in spreading awareness about CKD.

In a video shared by RCB, Green shed light on how he disliked the meals his mother prepared for him.

“At the time, I was upset with healthy meals, but I am thankful now for what I did then,” Green said.

He also shared his experience of meeting the patients at the BKF. “At the facility, I met patients, spoke to them about their life and understood what they go through personally. The beauty of my situation is that I have a good social media presence that I can give back to certain foundations related to kidney disease around the world and showcase that I’m one of the lucky ones to be healthy. But a lot of people in my situation are not as healthy. In a way, it is my destiny that I have been lucky enough to have that opportunity to live a normal life, in doing so, I want to help and give back,” Green said.

It must be excruciating for Green to be mindful of his diet restriction, especially since he is a globe-trotting cricketer and an all-format player for Australia.

Green mentioned that he cannot have excess salt and protein intake, while also praising RCB for looking after his dietary requirements.

“With my conditions, I have to take care of my salt and protein, I have to keep it to a minimum. While playing I can slightly increase my salt volume. It is a challenging diet, but I must be strict with it because I not only want to perform on the field, but also think about the long-term plans,” he said.

“RCB people have been unreal with helping me here. I have got in touch with the chefs here and got my special diet worked out,” he added.

RCB have played three games so far in IPL 2024, winning just once and losing twice. Green has been part of all three matches and has scored 54 runs and taken two wickets.

RCB play Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their next game on Tuesday.
