Former Indian bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, who has also played in two Tests and three ODIs for Men in Blue in the mid-1990s, was announced as the bowling coach of the Mumbai Indians on Wednesday (October 16) for the upcoming 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
He will work along with current bowling coach Lasith Malinga. The former Sri Lankan pacer was appointed as MI’s bowling coach for IPL 2024.
In an official release, MI said, “Mumbai Indians, today, announced the return and appointment of Paras Mhambrey as bowling coach, who will work along with current bowling coach Lasith Malinga as part of the coaching team under Head Coach Mahela Jayewardene. Paras Mhambrey was part of the Mumbai Indians coaching team previously, with the team having won the IPL 2013, Champions League T20 (2011, 2013), a runner-up finish (2010), and two more playoff appearances in the IPL. Mhambrey’s latest stint was at the bowling coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, which culminated with the T20 World Cup win earlier this year.”

The news of Mhambrey’s appointment comes days after former Sri Lankan skipper Jayawardene was re-appointed as the head coach of the Mumbai-based franchise. During Mahela’s first stint with MI, the Ambani’s owned side won IPL titles in 2017, 2019, and 2020 under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.
After a forgetful IPL 2024 season where it could only manage to win four out of 14 matches and finish last in the points table under Hardik Pandya’s leadership, the Mumbai Indians would like to come up with a big show in the next edition of the world’s richest franchise cricket league and become champions for the record-extending sixth time.
Ahead of the IPL 2025, however, it will be interesting to see which players from the 2024 squad MI retain for the 2025 season as well. As per BCCI’s retention rules, all 10 teams are allowed to retain as many as six players before the IPL 2025 mega auction, and of those six star players, one has to be an uncapped Indian player.
With the likes of Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Tilak Varma, among others associated with MI, it will be interesting to see who all are retained by the side.
