Saud Shakeel Equals 65-Year-Old Record, Becomes Joint-Fastest Batter To...
During the first day's play of the ongoing first Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh, Saud Shakeel became the joint-fastest batter to score 1000 runs in Tests for Pakistan.

The first Test of the ongoing two-match series between Pakistan and Bangladesh is currently underway at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. On Day 1 of the series opener, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first. His decision to bowl first turned out to be a masterstroke for Bangladesh, as during the first hour of Day 1’s play, they managed to dismiss three Pakistani batters for just 16 runs in 8.2 overs. But after early setbacks, Pakistan made a comeback in the game and finished the first day’s play at 158 for 4 in 41 overs.

Newly appointed vice captain, Saud Shakeel, remained unbeaten at 57 runs from 92 balls, whereas opener Saim Ayub scored 56 runs from 98 runs. They added 98 runs for the fourth wicket before Saim was sent back to the pavilion by Hasan Mahmud.

During the first day’s play, left-handed batter Shakeel equalled a 65-year-old record by becoming the joint-fastest batter in history to score 1000 runs in Tests for Pakistan. The 28-year-old Karachi-born batter crossed the 1000-run mark in his 20th inning of the 11th Test. Before him, Saeed Ahmed also scored 1000 Test runs for Pakistan in his 11th Test. Saeed had achieved the feat during the Test match played between Pakistan and Australia in Karachi from December 4–9, 1959.

Fastest to 1000 runs in Tests for Pakistan

Overall, the record for scoring the fastest 1000 runs in Tests is held by former Australian batter Sir Donald Bradman. The legendary cricketer crossed the 1000-run mark in his 7th Test, which he played against England in Leeds (1930).

In terms of innings taken to cross the 1000-run mark in Tests, the record is jointly shared by England’s Herbert Sutcliffe and Everton Weekes of the West Indies. They both completed 1000 runs in the 12th inning of the ninth Test.

Yashasvi scored 1000 runs in nine Tests

During the India-England Test series played earlier this year, star Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal became the fastest Indian batter to score 1000 runs in Tests. He crossed the 1000-run mark in the red-ball format of the game in his ninth match.
