Before the Indian team’s trip to Sri Lanka, the new Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir along with the Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar had addressed the media in a press conference where they talked about how he plans to deal with India’s pace attack.
Among the notable omissions for India’s upcoming tour was that of their lead pacer, Jasprit Bumrah. The 30-year-old pacer has been an indispensable part of India’s bowling unit across all three formats, but he was not picked in either the ODI or T20I squads that will go up against Sri Lanka later this month.

Gambhir stated that the primary reason for not picking someone like Bumrah was just to manage his workload. He has been part of the side for the home Test series against England followed by the Indian Premier League and then the T20 World Cup 2024.
“I’ve said it before workload management for someone like Jasprit Bumrah is important. But for batters, if they can play consistently and are in good form, they might as well play all the games,” Gambhir commented.
He added, “With Rohit and Virat not playing T20 cricket, they only have two formats to focus on, so I’m sure they will be available for most of the games”.
Gambhir understands the physical toll that a fast bowler has to endure and reiterates the importance of workload management when it comes to a fast bowler.
“For Jasprit Bumrah, who is a rare type of bowler, it’s our responsibility to keep him fresh for the most important games. Workload management is crucial not only for Jasprit Bumrah but for most fast bowlers,” he concluded.

India will travel to Sri Lanka to take part in a white-ball tour which begins with a three-match T20I series followed by a three-match ODI series as well.
The 20-over games will take place in Palekelle while the 50-over games will be held in Colombo. The tour will be Gambhir’s first assignment as the head coach of the side and he will be looking to kick things off with a bang.
