Kanpur University, also known as Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU), has achieved a significant milestone by attaining the esteemed status of Category 1, conferred by the University Grants Commission (UGC). This distinction is a moment of immense pride for the institution, which had previously been bestowed with an A+ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
With its inclusion in Category 1 by the UGC, CSJMU gains access to a host of benefits outlined in Clause 4 of the UGC Regulations, 2018. These privileges include greater autonomy in introducing new courses, establishing centres beyond the main campus and exemption from UGC approval for research partnerships. However, the institution is required to keep the UGC informed of any changes made within its framework.
This achievement propels CSJMU into the top 10 per cent of institutions nationwide. Remarkably, it stands as only the second university in Uttar Pradesh to attain this prestigious status, following in the footsteps of Lucknow University. The announcement came after the commission reviewed the proposal submitted by the institution during its 577th meeting on February 13.
Professor Vinay Kumar Pathak, the Vice-Chancellor of CSJMU, attributed this milestone to the collective efforts of the faculty, staff and students, remarking, “We are delighted that the hard work of our teachers, students, and administrative staff paid off.” Anandiben Patel, the Governor of Uttar Pradesh and Chancellor of CSJMU extended her congratulations to the institution on its historic achievement, highlighting the dedication of its members as the driving force behind its success.
Before this accolade, CSJMU had earned an A+ grade from the NAAC, receiving an outstanding CGPA of 3.57. This latest recognition further solidifies the university’s reputation for excellence in higher education and underscores its unwavering commitment to academic and research excellence.
