New Delhi: Three time champions Dempo are now the new league leaders after an easy 4-1 victory over newly promoted Shillong Lajong at Margao's Nehru Stadium on Sunday evening.
Indian international Sunil Chhetri scored a brace while Beto and Anthony Pereira bagged a goal each for Armando Colaco's team. James Gbilee scored a consolation goal for the visitors.
Dempo took the lead inside the first five minutes when Anthony Pereira got on the end of a diagonal pass from Nicolau Borges and found the back of the net with a good finish.
Seven minutes later Dempo doubled their advantage through Brazilian Beto, who has now scored in every round of this season’s I-League.
The home side were dominating the game but Sunil Chhetri was at fault for missing a couple of good chances.
But the former East Bengal striker finally found the net three minutes before the break when he shrugged off the challenge from Lajong defender Wailadmi Passah and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Gumpe Rime.
Lajong started well in the second half and pulled one back through James Gbilee, who scored after receiving a good pass from right winger Marlangki Suting.
Two minutes later, Dempo regained their three goal advantage as Chhetri headed home a delightful cross from Anthony Pereira.
Armando Colaco’s team played within themselves for the rest of the game and couldn’t add to their four goals. Lajong also had a much better half defensively but couldn't reduce the deficit.
This result brings Dempo level on points with JCT but the Goan side are ahead having scored one extra goal.
Stanley Rosario’s Shillong Lajong end their sequence of three consecutive away games with a defeat and now would be looking ahead to their first home tie against Air India in a week’s time.
Goalscorers: Anthony Pereira (Dempo) 5’, Beto (Dempo) 12’, Sunil Chhetri (Dempo) 42’, 55’, James Gbilee (Shillong Lajong) 53’
