Champions League winners Real Madrid beat Europa League champions Atalanta 2-0 on Wednesday (August 14) to win the UEFA Super Cup title. In the final played at Warsaw National Stadium, Federico Valverde scored the opening goal for Real in the 59th minute of the match, and then in the 68th minute, French superstar Kylian Mbappe scored his first goal for the Los Blancos in his debut match.
Mbappe has joined Real on a free transfer after his contract with PSG came to an end in June.
The 2-0 win over the Serie A club helped Real win the Super Cup for the record-extending sixth time, and it also helped its star midfielder Luka Modric create a new record.
The 38-year-old Croatian midfielder has now become the most decorated player in Real Madrid’s history. The Super Cup win on Wednesday is the 27th trophy he has won as a Real Madrid player since joining the Spanish club from Premier League side Tottenham in August 2012.
The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner now sits one trophy clear of former Real skipper Nacho, who left the club as a free agent this summer. Spanish right-back Dani Carvajal also has 26 trophies to his name, whereas Karim Benzema and Marcelo are in third place with 25 trophies each.
Most trophies for Real Madrid
- Luka Modric – 27
- Nacho – 26
- Dani Carvajal – 26
- Karim Benzema – 25
- Marcelo – 25
- Toni Kroos – 23
His trophy haul includes five UEFA Super Cups, six Champions Leagues, five FIFA Club World Cups, four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey, and five Spanish Super Cups.
Ancelotti equals Munoz’s feat
The UEFA Super Cup win in Warsaw also helped Carlo Ancelotti become the joint-most successful manager in Real Madrid history. The former AC Milan, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich boss has won 14 trophies with Real, which puts him on level terms with Miguel Munoz, who also won 14 titles with Real Madrid from 1960 to 1974 (2 European Cups, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 9 La Liga’s, and 2 Spanish Cups).
Ancelotti, who won the Champions League with Real during his first stint, has won a total of three Champions Leagues, two La Liga, two Copa del Rey, two Supercopa de España, two FIFA Club World Cups, and three Super Cup titles.
