Johannesburg: Germany’s Thomas Mueller has revealed his pride at being nominated as the Young Player of the World Cup, but he has also stated that it is not the prize he wanted at the start of the competition.
Along with Ghana’s Andre Ayew and Mexico’s Giovani dos Santos, Mueller is battling it out for the right to be named the top youngster in the competition, and the 20-year-old still has one more game in which to showcase his talents in this tournament, though it is the third place play-off against Uruguay.
“I am delighted to be on that list, but winning the World Cup would have been a nicer reward,” he said before emphasising the importance of Saturday’s fixture. “I think we need a win to leave South Africa on a high.”
Mueller hopes that the Netherlands can win Sunday’s final, which pits his Bayern Munich team-mates Mark van Bommel and Arjen Robben against Spain.
“I haven't really spoken to or texted [Robben or Van Bommel] since the semi-finals, but I know it is their dream,” he said. “It would be great if they won the World Cup, because my club team would field world champions.”
Die Mannschaft start as favourites to claim third place, though their squad has been adversely affected by a flu bug.
