Madrid: Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has stated that the Copa del Rey holders will beat Barcelona this season, AS reports.
The Santiago Bernabeu side were unable to really challenge the Catalans for the Primera Division title in 2010-11, while they were eliminated by their rivals in the semi-finals of the Champions League, too.
Although they did beat Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final, Madrid were far from satisfied with their overall results against head coach Pep Guardiola's men, and upon visiting Centro Navas de Tolosa de Discapacitados Intelectuales, a centre for disabled children, Cristiano Ronaldo promised a fan that they will do better this season.
"Relax my friend, we will beat Barcelona this term," the Portugal international responded when asked whether Real Madrid would be able to beat the Champions League holders this season.
Real Madrid were beaten 5-4 on aggregate by their arch rivals in the Spanish Supercopa earlier this season.
Barcelona currently sit atop of the Primera Division table with 14 points from six games, while Real Madrid are third with 13 points.
Meanwhile, the Portuguese attacker believes he can continue breaking scoring records in the Primera Division after picking up the Pichichi award for netting the most league goals in the Spanish top flight last term.
"In football nothing is impossible and every record can be broken," the Portuguese was quoted as saying by Marca.
"I hope to surpass the previous record, but I want to thank my teammates for making it possible for me to win the trophy."
"We will see what happens in the future, you never know what may happen, but I could beat the record."
Ronaldo's goal haul in the league last season surpassed previous record-holders Telmo Zarra and Hugo Sanchez, who both amassed 38 goals in 30 and 35 league games, respectively.
The former Manchester United man is the only player in history to have scored 40 or more goals in a single La Liga season.
