Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a super fun fighting game to play on the Nintendo Wii—but it’s even more fun when you can play as all the different characters and harness all their special abilities! If you want to unlock all of the characters in the SSBB, there are 15 possible characters to discover. We’ll walk you step-by-step through unlocking each one, as well as other unlockable items like stages, modes, trophies, and masterpieces.

Unlocking All Characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Captain Falcon You can unlock Captain Falcon through one of the following three methods: Defeat Captain Falcon after playing at least 70 matches in Brawl mode. Complete Classic Mode on Normal (or higher) in under 12 minutes, then defeat Captain Falcon. Get Captain Falcon to join your party in the Subspace Emissary (Stage 20).

Falco Falco can be unlocked via one of the following three methods: Defeat Falco after playing at least 50 Brawl matches. Defeat Falco after completing a 100-Man Brawl. Get Falco to join your party in the Subspace Emissary (Stage 18).

Ganondorf Ganondorf is unlockable via any one of these four methods: Defeat Ganondorf after playing at least 200 Brawl matches. Defeat Ganondorf after using Zelda to complete Classic Mode on Normal difficulty. Defeat Ganondorf after using Link to complete Classic Mode on Hard difficulty. Get Ganondorf to join your party in the Subspace Emissary (Stage 30).

Jigglypuff Jigglypuff can be unlocked in any one of the following four ways: Defeat Jigglypuff after playing 350 Brawl matches. Defeat Jigglypuff after completing the Subspace Emissary and Classic Mode with any character except Ike. Complete the Subspace Emissary, then complete all even matches through Stage 20. Then use a blast to defeat Jigglypuff. Complete the Subspace Emissary, then return to Stage 18 ("The Swamp"). Fire yourself from one of the barrels into a floating door, then fight (and defeat) Jigglypuff there.

Lucario You'll be able to unlock Lucario in one of three ways: Defeat Lucario after playing at least 100 matches in Brawl mode. Defeat Lucario after beating Target Smash on every difficulty. Get Lucario to join your party in the Subspace Emissary (Stage 21).

Luigi You can unlock Luigi in any one of the following three ways: Defeat Luigi after playing 22 matches in Brawl mode. Finish the "Classic" mode without losing (i.e., without any Continues), then defeat Luigi. Get Luigi to join your party in the Subspace Emissary (Stage 29).

Marth Marth can be unlocked in any one of the following three ways: Defeat Marth after playing at least 10 Brawl matches. Defeat Marth after completing Classic Mode at least once. Get Marth to join your party in the Subspace Emissary (Stage 8).

Mr. Game & Watch There are four distinct ways in which you can unlock Mr. Game & Watch: Defeat Mr. Game & Watch after playing at least 250 Brawl matches. Complete Classic Mode with every original character. Complete Target Smash (on any one difficulty level) with at least 30 different characters. Then, defeat Mr. Game & Watch. Get Mr. Game & Watch to join your party in the Subspace Emissary (Stage 25).

Ness Ness can be unlocked through one of the following three methods: Defeat Ness after reflecting 10 projectiles. Defeat Ness after completing 5 Brawl matches. Get Ness to join your party in the Subspace Emissary (Stage 29).

R.O.B. You can unlock the Robotic Operating Buddy in any one of the following three ways: Play at least 160 Brawl matches, then defeat R.O.B. Defeat R.O.B. after obtaining 250 trophies. Get R.O.B. to join your party in the Subspace Emissary (Stage 27).

Snake Snake can be unlocked in any one of the following three ways: Defeat Snake after playing at least 130 Brawl matches. Defeat Snake after playing at least 15 matches on Shadow Moses Island. Get Snake to join your party in the Subspace Emissary (Stage 23).

Sonic You can unlock Sonic via any one of the following four methods: Defeat Sonic after playing at least 300 Brawl matches. Complete the Subspace Emissary. Defeat Sonic after completing Classic Mode with 10 different characters. Play at least 10 hours of VS. mode.

Toon Link Toon Link can be unlocked in any one of the following three ways: Defeat Toon Link after playing at least 400 Brawl matches. Complete the Subspace Emissary, then complete Classic Mode with any character before defeating Toon Link. Complete the Subspace Emissary, then enter through the first door in The Forest (Stage 9) and defeat Toon Link.

Wolf You can unlock Wolf through any one of the following three methods: Defeat Wolf after playing at least 450 matches in Brawl mode. Complete the Subspace Emissary. Then, use Fox to beat Boss Rush Mode before defeating Wolf. On Stage 14 (The Ruins), play as Fox. At the end of the second part of the stage, you’ll see a platform moving slowly downwards next to some spikes on the wall. There will be a door there—don’t enter it! Keep riding downwards on the platform until you disappear and fall. Enter the new door that appears, then defeat Wolf to unlock him.

Unlocking Super Smash Bros. Brawl Stages & Builder Parts

SSBB has 12 unlockable stages and 3 unlockable stage builder parts. “Stages” are the arenas in which you battle against other characters or players, while “Stage Builder Parts” are various pieces (e.g., Floors, Structures, Features) you can use to create your own custom battle arenas. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, you’ll begin with 29 initial stages and have 12 more to unlock: Stages: 75 m: Play 20 times as Donkey Kong on VS. Mode. Big Blue: Play 10 times as Captain Falcon on VS. Mode. Flat Zone 2: Unlock Mr. Game & Watch. Green Greens: Play 20 times as Kirby on VS. Mode. Green Hill Zone: Unlock Sonic. Hanenbow: Clear the "Flower Blooms in the Echoes" event. Jungle Japes: Play 10 times on any Melee stage in VS. Mode. Luigi's Mansion: Play 3 times as Luigi in VS. Mode. Mario Bros.: Clear the "Wario Bros." event. Pirate Ship: Unlock Toon Link. Unlocking Super Smash Bros. Brawl Modes

There are 5 unlockable modes in SSBB. The “Modes” or “Menus” in the Super Smash Bros. universe offer different ways to play the games and battle against various characters. Some Modes are single-player, while others can host multiple players. For example, Classic Mode, Subspace Emissary, and Versus Mode are all initially available in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, although there are Modes to be unlocked: Boss Battles: Beat Classic Mode and the Subspace Emissary. All-Star Mode: Unlock all characters. More Rules: Play 200 VS. Mode matches. Random Stage Switch: Unlock all stages. Target Smash levels 2-5: Play each level (2-5) in Classic Mode.

Unlocking Super Smash Bros. Brawl Assist Trophies

There are 6 unlockable assist trophies in SSBB. Assist trophies are items that can be used to summon non-playable characters for aid—generally, these characters come from another video game series. They appear as capsule-like items that can be picked up and activated in the middle of gameplay. Here are some of the unlockable Assist Trophies in Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Barbara: Get 25 songs. Grey Fox: Unlock Snake. Infantry & Tanks: Play 300 VS. Mode matches. Isaac: Play 200 VS. Mode matches. Ray MK III: Play 100 VS. Mode matches. Shadow: Unlock Sonic.

Unlocking Super Smash Bros. Brawl Masterpieces

There are 5 unlockable masterpieces in SSBB. Masterpieces are limited-edition trial versions of classic Nintendo games that come included on the Super Smash Bros. Brawl game disc. By playing these Masterpieces, you can test out the classic games that SSBB characters originate from. These are the Masterpiece games available to unlock in SSBB: Donkey Kong : Have 10 hours of play time. Super Mario Bros. 2: Win 5 battles as Peach. Super Mario World: Play on Yoshi's Island 3 times. F-Zero: Have Captain Falcon join your party in The Subspace Emissary. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: Play as Toon Link 10 times in VS. Mode.

Understanding Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Unlock System

Unlock most SSBB via VS. matches or Subspace Emissary mode. When you start playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl, you’ll already have 21 original playable characters, but there are 14 more that you can unlock! Most of these new characters can be unlocked by completing a certain number of VS. matches, playing in the Subspace Emissary mode, or completing a different challenge (which you can find above).
