The LocalCircles survey also indicated that most people did not go to the company for TV repairs due to high charges.

With OTTs gaining popularity, the sales of Smart TVs have seen a rise over the past few years. The Indian Smart TV Market was valued at $ 11.53 Billion in 2023 and the revenue is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16.57 per cent from 2024 to 2030, reaching nearly $ 33.72 Billion by 2030. However, Smart TVs come with their own issues.

A LocalCircles survey indicates that Smart TVs are failing technically, demanding repairs sooner. According to the survey, 1 in every 3 households said their last television had problems within 5 years, adding that most people did not go to the company for repairs due to high charges.

The survey asked people, “When you had to buy a new television in the last 5 years, how did you purchase it?” A majority 57 per cent consumers said they “visited a retail electronics store and purchased” while 35 per cent “placed an order via eCommerce platform and got it home delivered.” Almost 6 per cent people “called a retail electronics store and got it home delivered.”

The survey then asked users, “How long did your last television work without needing a repair?” Out of 12,425 people who responded to the question, the majority 61 per cent of consumers said it lasted “5+ years”, 19 per cent said “3-5 years”, 9 per cent said “2-3 years” while 3 per cent said “1-2 years”. Breaking down the poll, 1 per cent said it lasted “Less than 1 year” while 5 per cent said “Last television was fine but we upgraded for more features”. To sum up, 32 per cent consumers said their last television went bad in less than 5 years.

The survey then asked, “When you had a television that needed repairs in the last 5 years, what did you do?” Of the total 11,005 responses to this question, 16 per cent indicated that they “just bought a new television instead as it was cost prohibitive to get it repaired” while 15 per cent “just bought a new television instead as I wanted newer features or bigger size or both.” The remaining 66 per cent chose to get their television repaired. The survey data shows the biggest chunk of 31 per cent respondents chose to get it “repaired locally and paid reasonable charges”; 29 per cent got it repaired from the “company and paid excessive charges”. To sum up, of those who had a television needing repair in the last 5 years, only 35 per cent got it repaired by the brand/ company while the other opted for local repairs and television upgrade.

The findings clearly indicate that televisions are failing much faster than in the previous decades when televisions would function 5-7 years normally and sometimes even 10 years without needing any repairs.

The survey received over 36,000 responses from consumers located in 329 districts of India. While 64 per cent respondents were men, 36 per cent respondents were women. Meanwhile, 44 per cebt respondents were from tier 1, 32 per cent from tier 2 and 24 per cent respondents were from tier 3, 4 and rural districts.
