THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A major orthopaedic surgery was recently carried out in the district on a 104-year-old-lady who suffered a hip fracture. Mariyam Beevi of Dar ul Huda, Navaikulam, the great grandmother of five generations, survived this intricate procedure, which made her able to move about with the help of walker on the very seventh day after surgery. The hip fracture was the result of a fall at home and Mariyam Beevi was brought to KTCT Hospital, Chathampara, Attingal. Dr Niranjan T J, orthopaedic surgeon of the hospital, suggested the options of either undergoing a surgery to fix the fracture internally or remaining bedridden for the rest of her life. The caretakers and the patient daringly chose the first option even after being well-informed about the immense risks of anaesthesia and a major surgical procedure at this age. The operation was done by a team led by Dr Niranjan and anaesthetist Dr Unnikrishnan. They were assisted by RMO Dr Azaruddin and physicians Dr Thomas Manuel and Dr Saleel Muhammad. According to the doctors, such a major surgery is rarely done on patients at this advanced age. The surgery was completely successful and they expressed the hope that it would definitely make Mariyam Beevi’s remaining days more lively.
