Lucknow: Thirteen undertrials, including members of some dacoit gangs, escaped from police custody when they were being taken to jail from court in Banda district of Uttar Pradesh, a senior police officer said on Thursday.

Altogether 47 undertrials were taken to Chitrakoot Court from Banda jail in two vehicles on Wednesday with a van carrying 20 prisoners and a truck 27 inmates, IG law and order BP Singh told reporters here.

"While returning back, some prisoners from among the 20 undertrials, threw chilly powder on the eyes of two police personnel, snatched a rifle and broke the door," he said.

Stating 13 of the inmates managed to escape from the spot, Singh said no arrest has been made so far.

"The undertrials who escaped included Chunilal, brother-in-law of slain dacoit Ambika Patel alias Thokia and three members of Radhey dacoit gang - Shiv Murti Kol, Rammu Kol and Dinesh and another Dinesh serving life sentence," he said.

The IG also said that a case had been lodged and four police personnel in the van arrested.

"On charges of laxity reserve inspector Chiktrakoot Shiv Ram, head constable Jai Prakash, constables Dallu Khan and Madan Gopal and driver Mushtaq Khan of the van have been suspended from service," he said.

Dreaded dacoit Thokia, who faced 147 criminal charges and carried a reward of Rs five lakh on his head, was killed in an encounter with the special task force of UP Police in August 2008.
