KORAPUT: Seventeen Dussehra revellers died and 14 were injured, nine of them seriously, when their tipper truck overturned at Dasamantapur in Koraput district on Friday. The victims included seven women and eight children.The mishap occurred when the villagers were returning home after watching a ‘jatra’ at Dasamantapur, about 60 km from here, Koraput SP Anoop Sahu said. The driver of the tipper lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a sharp turn. The victims were crushed under the vehicle after it overturned. Locals had to pull them out.While 14 persons died on the spot, four of the seriously hurt succumbed in the hospital. They were from Parjabeda Padar, S Totaguda, Semiguda and Dengaguda villages.The injured were admitted to nearby hospitals. The seriously injured were shifted to the district headquarters hospital at Koraput where their condition was stated to be critical, police said. The district administration has announced an ex gratia of Rs. 6,000 to the kin of the deceased. The villagers, however, demanded a compensation of Rs. 20,000 each to the bereaved families. The deceased have been identified as Ragi Mudli (12), Lamta Jani, Chobi Jani (15), Mani Jani, Maodino Pradhan (12), Tula Patro, Jayamram Jani (12), Arjuno Mudli (12), Basanta Kuldeep (14), Mangala Mudli, Sabita Mudli (12), Sanjeet Khosala, Suna Mudli, Chinki Mudli (15), Ravi Jani (13), Kunu Mudli (12) and Navino Mudli (13).
