At least five people allegedly fell sick after having a mouth freshener that had dry ice mixed in it at a restaurant after having dinner, police said on Monday. Four of the five people have been hospitalised, they said.

According to a complaint lodged by Ankit Kumar, a resident of Greater Noida, he went to the Laforestta Cafe in Sector 90 with his wife and four friends for dinner on Saturday, reported news agency, PTI.

Five people started vomiting blood and reported a burning sensation in their mouths after eating mouth freshener after their meal at a cafe in Gurugram. They were hospitalized and two are critical.

After the dinner, a waiter at the restaurant brought mouth freshener and five people in the group had it. Their health deteriorated soon after and were taken to a hospital, Kumar said, adding that the restaurant staff fled.

“I showed the packet of the mouth freshener to a doctor, who said it was dry ice. According to the doctor, it is an acid which can lead to death,” quoted the news agency as saying one of the complainants.

Based on the complaint, police said, an FIR was registered under sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) agsainst the restaurant’s owner at Kherki Daula police station on Sunday.

“We are investigating the matter and action will be taken as per law,” said Station House Officer Inspector Manoj Kumar.

In another unrelated suspected case of food poisoning in Kerala, several people, including children, got admitted to various hospitals after eating food from a restaurant. Police said that around 20 people, including nine members of a family, sought treatment in various hospitals after eating food from the restaurant – Spicy Hotel.

The health of everyone who was affected is stable, police said, adding that the Health Department shut down the restaurant today. Presently, no one has lodged a complaint with the police, it said.

A relative of one of the affected persons told a TV channel that they had brought food from the restaurant on Thursday evening and by this morning everyone was suffering from vomiting and diarrhea.
