The prices of vegetables have been soaring over the past week. With shortage in the arrival of vegetables and fruits in mandis, most staple vegetables like onion, potatoes and tomatoes are selling at higher prices. A LocalCircles survey has indicated that consumers are paying Rs 50 per kg or more for tomato.
The prices of some vegetables have doubled during the last few weeks due to weather conditions – from extreme heat to delayed rains in some areas and deluge in others. Areas affected by heavy rains are reported to be having trouble in transportation of vegetables or crop getting damaged, leading to increased prices.
71% Pay Rs 50/kg Or More For Tomato
The survey said 71 per cent household consumers have confirmed paying Rs 50 per kg or more for tomato, Rs 30 per kg or more for potato and Rs 30 per kg or more for onion. The survey also said that at least 18 per cent of them paid over Rs 100 per kg for tomato.
As per the survy, 20 per cent of the respondents indicated that they bought tomato for Rs 75-100, potato for Rs 30-50 and onion for Rs 30-50 while 33 per cent stated that they bought tomato for Rs 50-75, potato for Rs 30-50 and onion for Rs 30-50. The survey showed an increasing percentage of households paying over Rs 50 per kg for tomatoes as compared to previous few weeks.
Weekly Vegetable Spending Increased by Over 50% For 34% Consumers
Meanwhile, over 6 in 10 household consumers have indicated that their weekly spending on vegetables has increased by 50 per cent or more as compared to months of April and May.
The survey asked, “How much has your weekly household vegetable spending (for the same items) increased as compared to prior months (April-May) due to higher prices?” Out of 14,371 responses, 11 per cent indicated that the spending increased by 100 per cent or more, 20 per cent of the respondents indicated it increased by 75-100 per cent while 34 per cent said their vegetable spend “increased by 50-75 per cent.”
The survey received over 41,000 responses from households located in 393 districts of India. While 62 per cent respondents were men, 38 per cent respondents were women. A total of 42 per cent respondents were from tier 1, 25 per cent from tier 2 and 33 per cent respondents were from tier 3, 4 and rural districts.
