An 85-year-old freedom fighter has been running from pillar to post for the last seven years to get a piece of land for himself.

Krishnasamy of Ottanpatti Pudhur in Thuraiyur was given a land patta on June 13, 2005 by the Tiruchy district administration under the freedom fighters’ quota.

However, to his shock, when the octagenarian went to see the allotted plot, the officials told him that the particular land belonged to a cooperative society, which too informed him that the land had been chosen as a site for a ration shop.

A dejected Krishnasamy then approached the Collectorate and was assured that he would be given patta for land at a different site.  However, till now Krishnasamy has not been given an alternative site. “I come to the Collectorate several times despite my weakness due to age, but nothing has happened,” Krishnasamy said. On Wednesday, he is understood to have asked collector Jayashree Muralidharan about it when he was offered a shawl.

“We are invited to be present twice a year for Independence Day and Republic Day and they (district administration) honour us with shawls. If our grievances are redressed, it will be the greatest honour,” he said.
