CHENNAI: A native of Tirutani district, Vijayakshmi, came to Chennai to pursue her higher education. Three years of hard work and hostel life later, she holds a bachelors degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the Women’s Christian College (WCC), and is the first college graduate in her family.Kuppu, her mother, says, “It was very difficult for us to get money to pay the fees. But we wanted our daughter to come up in life. We are so proud of her.” Proof of this is the large group present at her convocation ceremony – her grandmothers, aunts, uncles and cousins.This was just one of the many happy and proud families present at the WCC campus on Saturday evening, when the 867 graduates of the year 2011 received their UG and PG degrees. Dr. Nancy E. Chapman, President of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, USA presented the awards for general proficiency, best outgoing student and those scoring the highest marks at the University level.Addressing the graduates, she said, “Neuroscience shows that while giving to others, even if it costs us something dear, the pleasure centres of the brain are activated. This can be taken to show that giving is indeed better than receiving.”Dr Nancy added, “Carry the lessons you have learnt here throughout your life.” Principal of WCC, Dr Ridling Margaret Waller, in her annual report, highlighted the academic progress and achievements of the college. She reported that four students of the college from the departments of Psychology, Management Studies and Corporate Economics were attending a student exchange programme for one semester at Eastern University, USA.More than 200 students had been placed in renowned companies such as Mahindra Satyam & Tech Mahindra, Google India, Verizon, Wipro Technologies, Cognizant Technologies Solutions, Scope International and HCL Technologies, she added.
