BANGALORE: Neat and tidiness in the planning and presentation of varied programmes marked the 17th anniversary of Nandi School of Bharatanatya held at ADA Rangamandira on Saturday. The quantity of programmes was imbued with the right quality of the medium. In about less than two hours’ time fourteen numbers were presented to the best satisfaction of the cognoscenti as well as a common rasika. The sub-juniors, juniors and senior students of the school did proud to their Guru Geethalakshmi Govindarajan. In general there was a perfect coordination among the performers. The grammar and technique of Bharatanatya was almost faultless. The participants belonging to different age groups exuded confidence and danced with exuberance.Ably accompanied by Guru Geethalakshmi (nattuvanga), Vasudha Balakrishna (vocal), Somanna (violin), Narasimhamurthy (flute) and Ramesh (mridanga), alarippu, Ganesha stuti, pushpanjali, jatiswara (Kalyani), Dasarapada (Mella mellane, Mohana), kauvuthuvam (Nata) etc rendered in groups brought out the abilities of the young students. The Swarajathi in Bilahari raga Raara Venu sung by young boy Madhu Shreyas (grandson of Geethalakshmi) was noteworthy for the attractive combination of aduvus, swaras and jathis. The performances by senior most students like Kavya Shanmugam, Varshini and Divya Suresh, in particular, drew special attention of the lovers of dance. Their rendition of Ganesha stuti (Amrithavarshini raga, Ekadantane), Arunachala Kavi’s Yen pallikondirayya (ragamalika) and Kilikani (Anandabhairavi) reflected their hard work, hold over the dance form and laya. The trio was the cynosure of all eyes with their efficient negotiations of laya and bhava.Mridangist honouredVeteran mridangist A V Anand was conferred with the title of ‘Guru Kala Bhushana’ along with a citation, shawl and other paraphernalia on Sunday morning by academician-musician-yoga expert Dr Ananth K Atre in the presence of actor-dubbing artiste cum Professor of Sanskrit Dr Manjunatha Bhatta of Vijaya College under the aegis of Sri Gurusarvabhowma Music Academy led by young vocalist-teacher B R Srinidhi at B M Sri Kalabhavana, NR colony during the Academy’s seventh anniversary celebration.Srinidhi’s disciples upheld his reputation as a successful teacher by rendering Saveri varna (Jayaram and Kumaravyasabhatta), Nagumomu (Shwetha, Shruthi and Maitrayi), Endaro Mahanubhavulu (Gowtham and Kaushik, Valachi varna (Rukmini and Maitrayi), Jagadanandakaaraka (Disha and Dhanya) and others with neat diction and rhythmic control. The Nattakuranji pallaviThe highlight of the day long celebration was certainly the rendition of a raga, tana and pallavi in Nattakuranji raga and adi tala by a versatile percussionist Anur Ananthakrishna Sharma. Efficiently supported by the awardee A V Anand on mridanga and Vasuki on violin, Sharma paid obeisance to Jayadevi Sharade and took up Nattakuranji raga for detailed treatment. This tricky raga was sketched with all its details in tact in alapana and tana. His expansive manodharma had vivid expression. The pallavi line Anandame ponditini neenaama paadi was ornamented with the variations in speed, gait and bhava. Needless to say, the profound swaraprastara had enthralling rhythmic patterns which not only delighted the serious rasikas but also provided ample opportunities for Anand to add dimensions to them. The tani avartana was compact and comprehensive. The recital concluded with a sensitively sung devaranama Ranga baaro Panduranga baaro (Sindhubhairavi).
