Worli/Nashik (Maharashtra): After about 40 pilgrims lost their lives when a private luxury bus fell into a deep gorge near Nashik on Sunday, the authorities there have promised a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the kin of the dead.
“The bus was overloaded due to which this accident occurred. Appropriate action will be taken against people responsible for the deaths. According to the injuries, compensation will be granted within the range of Rs 10,000-50,000, and 1 lakh will be given to the kin of the dead,” Minister for Public Works, Chagan Bhujbal, announced.
“It's very unfortunate that this incident happened. Morning was a panicking situation for us, as people did not know what had actually happened. 81 patients are admitted in the hospital, out of which 38 are declared dead and 41 are critically injured," says NCP Local Corporator Sachin Ahiral.
"Administration is taking full care. There are limited resources in that particular region, so we are trying to admit them in Sion region. Relatives here have been called for the identification. Different kinds of mandals have also got together,” Ahiral adds.
Earlier during the day, the bus driver admitted that even though the bus was overloaded, there was little that he could have done to avoid the mishap.
"It happened because of brake failure. The bus was overloaded but people were adamant on boarding the same bus," he said.
