THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Assistant Commissioner of Police Radhakrishna Pillai was forced to open fire at the SFI activists in order to remove grievously injured policemen to hospitals, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the Assembly on Tuesday. “He was not at the spot. He had come down from the Commissioner’s Office after hearing that injured policemen could not be taken to the hospital,” Chandy said.“What happened on Monday was not desired by the government,” he said. Chandy said he assumed full responsibility for the admission given to Nirmal Madhav at the Government Engineering College, West Hill. He said that the Higher Education Principal Secretary, who had written a note for getting Nirmal’s admission, was not to blame in the issue. “The State Government is particular about one thing. If Nirmal Madhav wants to study, he should get the opportunity,” Chandy said.He also defended the decision to provide admission to the student in a government college saying that there were precedents during the LDF tenure. “Nirmal had to shuttle from college to college after being persecuted by the SFI,” he said. The Opposition, however, pointed out that there were no grounds for giving admission in a government college as the student had originally gained admission in a private self-financing college. They also denied Chandy’s claims of precedents set during the LDF rule. “We have no objection to Nirmal Madhav continuing his studies. But let it be in a private self-financing college,” said CPM’s A Pradeep Kumar, who sought leave for the adjournment motion.“The SFI had launched the agitation after Nirmal Madhav appeared for classes violating a verbal agreement that he would stay away until the technical committee submitted its report,” he said.
