BANGALORE: Several activists and NGOs fighting for Human Rights, expressed their solidarity for the ongoing fast-unto-death hunger strike against the nuclear power plant in Koodankulam. A peace protest march was held near Town Hall on Sunday.Activists from Karnataka Human Rights Organisation, Karnataka Tamil Makkal Iyakkam, Save Tamil Movement, Periyar Dravida Kazhagam and People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL Mysore) participated in a peace protest march near Town Hall.“We urge the removal of armed police and para-military forces surrounding the villages in the vicinity of Koodankulam and Revocation of section 144 clamped on Radhapuram Taluk,” an activist, Venkatesan P said.Paa Visaikko, 70-year-old activist from Sanmana Tamizh Maravar Kootamaippu said that they are not ready for any compensation and they completely against nuclear plant.“Even after the incident of Fukushima, if our government is supporting the project it is disheartening,” he said.While around 8,000 people are protesting against the nuclear power plant in Idithankarai, coastal village in Radhapuram Taluk, along with 15 other who are on huger strike, the government has not resumed talks with the people nor has it sent a team of doctors to the protest site.Speaking on Anna Hazare’s fast and the High Court hearing on lifting of sec 144 order in the Radhapuram Taluk, Major General S G Vombatkere said that Anna Hazare’s fast may have an impact on the news of Koodankulam getting diverted, but that may not have been deliberate effort.“I have faith in the Judiciary. I am confident that the judges will do a fair job and lift the sec 144 order.” Roopa Rao an activist said, “People have the right to life.Even after Japan’s Fukushima disaster, if APJ Kalam writes an articles in favour of the nuclear plant without any negativity, I doubt his points. We don’t need compensations. We want the project to be completely cancelled.”
