Actor George Clooney named UN Messenger of Peace
Clooney will join 8 other internationally renowned individuals as Messengers.

United Nations: Hollywood heart-throb George Clooney has been designated by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as a UN Messenger of Peace to raise awareness about the world body's peacekeeping efforts.

Clooney, a human rights activist, will join eight other internationally renowned individuals as Messengers to advocate on behalf of the UN and focus global attention on its efforts to improve the lives of billions of people, the United Nations announced on Friday.

He has has been recognised for his work to focus public attention on crucial international political and social issues.

"I am deeply honoured to receive this appointment," Clooney said."I look forward to working with the United Nations in order to build public support for its critically important work in some of the most difficult, dangerous and dire places in the world."

Clooney has been active in his endeavors to bring an end to the emergency in Sudan's troubled Darfur region, where more than 200,000 people have been killed and another 2.2 million forced to flee their homes since the fighting began in 2003 between Government forces and rebel groups.

He will receive his designation and meet representatives of countries contributing to UN peacekeeping efforts at the UN Headquarters here on January 31.

Current UN Messengers of Peace are Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein of Jordan; conductor Daniel Barenboim; author Paulo Coelho; actor Michael Douglas; primatologist Jane Goodall; violinist Midori Goto; cellist Yo-Yo Ma; and Nobel Laureate Elie.
