A week after the brutal assault on a woman in Karnataka’s Belagavi shocked the nation with its excruciating details, many are now fearing for the safety of their daughters and women in their houses.
According to an Indian Express report, the assault on the woman whose son eloped with a local girl has left residents fearing further violence and refusing to send their girls to school despite heightened security. The parents prefer not to even let their daughter go out to the market or to play outside they feel women are safe only at home.
M A Mahut, the headmaster of a Kannada Higher Primary School in Belagavi told the publication that more than 100 students, mostly girls, have stopped coming to the school ever since the fateful incident.
“We are seeing a dip in the students’ attendance in classes after the December 11 incident. Many parents are in a state of panic and are not willing to send their children, especially girls to school. Over 100 students from the village are not reporting to class,” Mahut told the publication.
The headmaster also added that the school staff is trying to motivate parents and students to come to school.
Last week, a woman in Karnataka’s Belagavi was allegedly assaulted, paraded naked and tied to an electric pole after her son eloped with a girl, whose engagement was fixed to someone else, police said on Monday.
Following the incident, the girl’s family attacked the boy’s house in the new Vantamuri village and vandalised it. Afterwards, the attackers then dragged the boy’s mother away, allegedly paraded her naked and tied her to an electricity pole.
After the incident, the Karnataka High Court of Karnataka on Monday took suo-moto cognisance of the incident and called for fixing collective responsibility on the society. The police have so far arrested 12 members of the family who carried out the assault, including five women.
Meanwhile, a five-member fact-finding team of BJP reached the village to collect firsthand information into the matter last week.
The delegation of MPs comprised Aparajita Sarangi, Sunita Duggal, Ranjeeta Koli, Locket Chatterjee and BJP national secretary Asha Lakra.
