After land problems, Big B now in tax trouble
Bachchan is accused of tax evasion and cover-up by the I-T department.

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has issued notices to actor Amitabh Bachchan, the Union Government, Revenue Intelligence Department and the Enforcement Directorate in a case of alleged tax evasion and cover-up deals.

The Bollywood megastar, who is one of the highest taxpayers in the country, had recently been served notices by the tax authorities, which accused him of tax evasion and cover-up deals.

According to reports, the I-T department has sent 37 notices to Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and their actor son Abhishek Bachchan in the last three months.

The Bachchans said they have paid taxes regularly and their contribution to the Mumbai tax kitty is the highest in the category of HNI. Later, the tax authorities also denied having sent any notices to him. But weeks later, the tax department slapped a new notice on his wife, Jaya.

The Bachchans' problems with the tax authorities have arisen at a time when the Bollywood star is entangled in legal hassles over two land deals — one in Uttar Pradesh and the other in Maharashtra.

After an Uttar Pradesh court ruled that Amitabh Bachchan is not a farmer and hence he has no right to buy farmland in the state, an eight-hectare land plot in Lonavala in Pune became the cause of trouble for the superstar. His land deal in Maharashtra has now come under scrutiny.

Bachchan, however, justifies the purchase of the Lonavala land on the grounds of him being a farmer in UP. The government has launched an investigation and plans to lodge a cheating case against Bachchan if the allegation is proved right.

Bachchan had brought the land in 2000 despite laws in the state that prevent non-farmers from buying agricultural land. The state government asked him to prove his farmer status following, which Amitabh produced documents, which showed that he owned agricultural land in Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh.

But the recent court order from UP now means that Bachchan may lose his land and also charged with a cheating case.
