New Delhi: R S Marya only had some words of comfort for his wife, a cancer patient who silently suffered her excruciating pain waiting at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
Doctors on strike refused to treat her and finally the couple had to return unattended.
In less that an hour after the Maryas left, the doctors — protesting the forcible removal of the institutes's Director, Dr P Venugopal by a Bill in Parliament — returned to work.
The strike was lifted after Dr Venugopal decided to appeal in Supreme Court against the Bill. But they stuck to Wednesday's stand: they will not treat politicians.
Members of Parliament have threatened to move a privilege motion against such doctors, but the doctors seem unmoved.

Approval of the AIIMS Bill has certainly given a sharp trigger to on the ongoing turf war between Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss and Dr P Venugopal, but the fresh stand of the doctors — not to treat politicians — has brought the battle to the forefront, leaving no room for interface.
