With a spy camera, smartphone, mobile phone, pen drives, Bluetooth headphones and several other devices found in the cell of separatist leader Amritpal Singh in a major jail security breach in Assam, top security sources suspect the ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief could be in touch with Khalistani groups.
As his family members were regular visitors, their role is under the scanner, they said. “His wife used to visit him every 15 days and possibly she was behind supplying these items to him."
Singh and his nine associates are lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam. The recovered devices have been for forensic analysis. “They will look into who he was talking to and who is behind this," sources said.
Giving information about the breach, Assam DGP GP Singh informed that all devices were seized and action has been initiated.
“On receipt of Information about unauthorised activities taking place in the NSA cell, additional CCTV cameras were installed in the public area of NSA Block. Inputs received confirmed unauthorised activities, based on which Jail staff searched the premise of NSA Cell early this morning, leading to the recovery of a smartphone with SIM, keypad phone, TV remote with keyboard, spy-cam pen, pen drives, Bluetooth headphone & speakers and smart watch which were lawfully seized by Jail staff," the top cop said in a X post.
After weeks of dramatic manhunt, the Punjab Police had arrested 29-year-old Singh from a gurdwara in Rode in April 2023 under the stringent National Security Act. In February last year, Singh’s followers stormed the Ajnala police station to secure the release of an arrested associate.
