CHENNAI: There are pundits, who swear that the veena, with its rich potential for Gamakas, is the only true instrument, for performing Carnatic Music. The Veena concert by Jayaraj and Jayasri, the Vainikas, belonging to Sishya Parampara of Muthuswamy Dikshitar, was vivacious and impressive. The ‘Classical Timbre’ was writ large over the veena recital when they chose to give a veena presentation based on Lalitha’s Namas in Dikshitar’s compositions at Arkay Convention Centre, Mylapore, organised by Veena Vadhini. Beginning with (Sri Madhurapuri) in Raga Belahari, where Dikshitar prays to Goddess Meenakshi for protection, they revealed their laya perfections. Next, they chose (Sri Rama Saraswathi Sevitam) in Raga Nasamani also known as Nasika Bhooshani, paying obeisance to Goddess Rama Saraswathi. They showed their admirable control of the instrument, and their total control over vilambakalam. They proved that they had inherited a great culture, along with its caveats. They employed selective reticence in Raga Atana (Sri Madhurambikaya) and their aesthetic projections, in bringing out the divinity of the composition.Their uncommon ability to achieve their distinctive blend of artistry blanket with devotion were seen in the rendition of Kalyani (Shiva Kameswari) and in Karnataka Kapi (Sri Maharagni).Undoubtedly, their confluence of good lineage, good training, judgement and their own inner coiled spring of latent ability, proved their mettle.The Tanam and Pallavi (Balambi Kayai) in Ragamalika, in their presentation of the kriti in Nattaikurinji Raga was a cluster of sweet and resonant sounds.Their rendition reflected their pulsating mood and they did full justice to it.Umayalpuram Mali (Mridangam) with his usual adroit rhythmic delivery, kept pace with the requirements of the day.
