BANGALORE: The World 10K Bangalore, the World’s premier 10 km run opened with great enthusiasm in Bangalore’s Kantheevera Stadium on Sunday. Along with thousands of Bangalore’s running enthusiasts, celebrities and foreign participants, the marathon also saw a special senior citizens’ run. Harmony, institution partner and lead supporter of the Senior Citizens’ Run at the TCS World 10 K Bangalore 2011 showcased more than thousand participants between 40 to 70 years age group. The senior citizens run covered a distance of four kilometer. The Harmony for Silvers Foundation, founded in 2004 by Mrs Tina Ambani, is a non-government organisation working to improve the quality of life of the elderly in India.The chief guest at the event was former cricketer Venkatesh Prasad and actor Srinagara Kitty. “It is great to see older citizens coming in such large numbers to run on a Sunday morning,” said Srinagara Kitty. “It is great to know Harmony recognises the efforts of these extraordinary senior citizens. We are also proud to give special offers to seniors like the facility to bank online etc,” said Archana Bhargava, executive director of Canara Bank. The run displayed the potential of senior citizens, making aware that they are not a marginalised section of a society but a very vibrant group.The Harmony for Silvers Foundation foresees India’s elderly as ‘Silver Citizens’ – vibrant and proud. Harmony’s mission is to create an environment where silvers, irrespective of their cultural beliefs, can retain their dignity, self-respect, pride and self-confidence. The silver participants were greatly enthusiastic about the whole event. “Such an event gives us energy to look forward to our twilight years. It encourages us to be mentally and physically fit,” said KL Patil, 66-year-old participant who had come from Mysore for the marathon.
