Allahabad: A statue of Dalit icon BR Ambedkar in the Allahabad University premises was found damaged on Wednesday, close on the heels of a similar incident in Kanpur.
The statue of the Dalit leader, whose 50th death anniversary was observed on Wednesday, was found damaged on the university's law faculty premises early in the morning, official sources said.
A posse of police and Provincial Armed Constabulary personnel were deployed around the university area to prevent any outbreak of violence even as the varsity authorities got the statue repaired by the afternoon.
However, students protested the incident by staging a road blockade for over an hour in front of a degree college.
They also burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav accusing him of being responsible for the "insult to the Dalits' pride".
