Pulwama: An Indian Army Colonel was killed on Tuesday in an encounter with Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists in Tral Area of Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir. Colonel Munindra Nath Rai, the Commanding Officer of 42 Rashtriya Rifles, was injured and shifted to the 92 Base Camp hospital at the Badami Bagh cantonment in Srinagar where he later died.
A gun battle broke out between the terrorists and an Army unit and local police after the latter launched a cordon and search operation in Mindora village of Tral.
Jammu and Kashmir Police Head Constable Sanjeev Singh was also martyred in the encounter.
Two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists were also killed in the encounter. "Two terrorists - both locals - were killed in the operation," a police officer said. The terrorists have been identified as Adil Khan and Shiraz Dar.
The operation was launched after security forces got a tip off that a local Hizbul terrorist along with another accomplice had come home.
Some arms and ammunition have recovered from the scene of the encounter.
Just a day earlier, Colonel Rai, commissioned into the 2/9 Gorkha Rifles and on deputation with the 42 Rashtriya Rifles, had been awarded the Yudh Seva medal on the 66th Republic Day.
