Windsor: Australia's resurgence at the London Olympics was given momentum in the most unlikely of fashions on Thursday.
The country's canoe sprint squad is hardly a guaranteed source of gold medals at summer games — Australia had only won two in the sport's 74-year Olympic history.
That turned into three in the second day of finals at a sun-kissed Dorney Lake when the quartet of Tate Smith, Dave Smith, Murray Stewart and Jacob Clear stunned the established kayaking powers to win the men's 1,000-meter K-4 title.
Stewart says "I didn't realize it was Australia's first team gold (in canoe sprint) ... it's going to take a while to settle in." The other three golds were won by German and Hungarian boats, maintaining their dominance of the regatta.
