KANCHEEPURAM: A meeting between the operators of Ape Piaggio autos and the new entrant to the field, the Tata Magic, on Tuesday to resolve the turf war between the two groups, could not arrive at the desired destination. The meet has now been postponed to Friday. But until then, both the groups should not operate as “stage carriages,” or else the police would book the violators, warned RDO Dr Veerappan. Only 16 Tata Magic, the eight-seater, four-wheeler vehicle have been plying the Kancheepuram roads for the last one-and-a-half years. But, in the last three months as the number suddenly increased to 114, opening a Pandora’s box of turf war and concomitant traffic violations. It was also understood that many transport operators changed gear from Ape to Magic in the hope that the latter might be regularised as stage carriages. During the meeting, it was then suggested that Tata Magic might be operated to places where there are not enough public transport services available, and they should not “pick up tickets” until they cross the town limits. On the other hand, the Ape group said that no new permits should be given to Tata Magic vehicles in the district. However, RTO Suresh told Express later that the State was willing to register as many vehicles as the need arose as long as it did not create any law and problems and as it contributed to solving the issue of transportation in remote areas. It was then tentatively decided to demarcate parking areas for different groups of operators including Tata Magic, and a final solution as to who will park where permanently, would be decided in Friday’s meeting.
