The low-floor buses to be run under the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) will provide a comfortable travel to passengers, according to the project officials.
The city has got 13 low-floor buses for the BRTS project. Of them, 9 buses are being run between Vijayawada and Kodad at present as the project is yet to be commissioned.
According to RTC chief traffic officer B Nagendra Prasad, it is easy to board the low-floor bus as its footboard is 12-inch high only. It is also convenient to passengers to alight from the bus.
A notable feature of the bus is that the low-floor door can be further downed to 6 inches if required for the convenience of aged people. It has a total seating capacity of 35+1 in low floor and high floor.
The bus interiors are spacious. Hence, standing passengers do not face any inconvenience. The second door of the bus has a special arrangement for the convenience of physically challenged to board it. The special footboard of the bus allows a passenger sitting in a wheelchair to get into it. The bus is manufactured by TATA with all modern facilities. The bus costing Rs 50 lakh ensures a luxurious ride to to passengers, he said.
All the buses have electronic clocks. An automatic gear display system is also set up in the bus. Any technical snag in the bus can be detected through an advanced mechanism. The bus runs at a speed ranging from 50 to 120 kmph depending on the condition of the road, the chief traffic officer said.
Travelling in the low-floor bus by sitting in a seat on the high floor is really comfortable, said Mazdoor Union president VVSRV Prasad.
