BELGAUM: The move of the Belgaum City Corporation mayor, deputy mayor and some corporators, who participated in the MES black day agitation on November 1 and remained absent during the Rajyotsava celebrations, has triggered pro-Kannada activists to gear-up to stage a protest.Mayor Manda Balekundri, Dy Mayor Renu Killekar, Corporators Sambhajirao Patil, Netaji Jadhav, Balasaheb Kakatkar, Sarita Patil and some ZP and TP members have become the talk of the town.As the activists plan to file cases against the mayor, dy mayor and other representatives, they may face imprisonment if the case comes forward in the court. According to legal expert Ashok Halagali, this move, of the said representatives, may amount to Sedition Act 124A of the IPC, which says: whoever by words, signs or visible representation attempts to excite disaffection towards the government shall be punished with lifetime imprisonment to which a fine may be added, or with imprisonment which may extend to three years with fine.” President of Action Committee of Kannada Organisation, Ashok Chandargi has demanded the resignation of Mayor Manda. “Manda was the president of the finance committee of Rajyotsava and she had instructed officials to organise a grand procession. Now with the Dy Mayor Renu Killekar she has provoked Kannadigas’ sentiments by participating in the anti-state activity,” he said and added that both have lost moral and legal rights to continue in their office and should resign.Former president of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Rajiv Topannavar said he plans to pressurise the state to disqualify the corporators, the mayor and Dy mayor.
