FIFA have backed the proposed improvements with president Sepp Blatter even suggesting the ditch should be completely filled in.
Berlin: Berlin's Olympic stadium, a historic monument where Jesse Owens won four Olympic golds to the disgust of Hitler, is to have renovations to improve security before this summer's football World Cup, the Berlin city authorities said on Tuesday.
The 2.7m-deep ditch between the stands and the pitch is to be renovated allowing spectators to cross it and take refuge on the pitch if need be.
World football's governing body FIFA have backed the proposed improvements with president Sepp Blatter even once suggesting the ditch should be completely filled in.
The stadium will host six World Cup matches including a quarter-final and the June 9 final.
