The NDA government will soon enact a legislation for setting up a Central university at Motihari in Bihar, senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said on Thursday.
Modi has spoken to HRD Minister Smriti Irani and Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh who have assured him that the Bill on setting up the Central university would be passed soon by Parliament, according to a statement in Patna.
In the statement, Modi quoted Irani as having said that effective steps on the Bill would be taken and it will come up for enactment during the next session of Parliament so that academic activities may begin at the earliest. The BJP leader said he had requested the Union HRD Minister to name the proposed university after Mahatma Gandhi as Motihari was known as his 'karmabhumi'.
The erstwhile UPA government had agreed in-principle to set up two Central universities in the state in 2012. It enacted a legislation for setting up one of those at Gaya, but the Bill on the university at Motihari could not see the light of day. Modi had blamed the then Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the UPA government for a lack of initiative in setting-up the Motihari-based Central university.
