KUMILY: Life is returning to normalcy in the border towns of Idukki district. No major untoward incident was reported on Wednesday. Apart from the incident in Udumbanchola, the district remained peaceful the entire day. In Udumbanchola, a group of people who attempted to block the travellers to Tamil Nadu were disbursed by the police. Additional policemen were deployed in Udumbanchola after the incident. Around 5,000 agitators from Theni who were marching towards Kumily were blocked by the Tamil Nadu police at Gudallur. The Kerala and Tamil Nadu police had taken all precautionary measures as DMK president M Karunanidhi was addressing a protest meeting in Theni. The DMK also organised a human chain in all the districts of Tamil Nadu. More than 10,000 police personnel were deployed in check posts and border areas, sources said.Idukki district police chief George Varghese said that the district remained peaceful on Wednesday but the police and the India Reserve Battalion personnel would be alert in the border areas. “We have talked to senior police officials. The tense situation prevailing in Tamil Nadu has begun to calm down. After the Supreme Court verdict on Wednesday the agitators began to disperse. But we will not withdraw the force until peace returns on both sides. We are alert on preventing any kind of violence,” George Varghese said.
